For many people, reading Spirit Babies by Walter Makichen is a life-changing experience. I know it was for me.

The book often validates experiences people have never spoken about before. It introduces the possibility that children may communicate before conception, that signs and dreams can carry meaning, and that fertility may involve emotional, energetic, spiritual, and relational dimensions in addition to physical ones.

For some, the book brings a deep sense of comfort and recognition. Others feel excited, curious, hopeful, skeptical, or even overwhelmed. And for some, it raises more questions than answers.

Over the past two decades, I've had the privilege of exploring Spirit Baby connection through my own experiences, through conversations and sessions with Walter Makichen, and through supporting individuals and couples navigating fertility, conception, pregnancy, loss, IVF, donor conception, surrogacy, adoption, and other paths to parenthood.

What If I Don't Receive Any Signs?

One of the biggest fears many people have is the belief that everyone else can connect except them.

The absence of obvious signs doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no connection.

For some people, connection develops gradually over time. For others, the signs are much subtler than expected. 

In my decades of experience with Spirit Babies what I’ve found is that most people are already connecting with their Spirit Baby whether they know it or not. It’s more about allowing yourself to be in what I like to call “receive mode,” which requires slowing down.

Possibly.

Sometimes the challenge isn't receiving signs. It's learning how to recognize them. The invitation is to allow yourself to slow down and observe the more subtle signs in life, as this is typically how your future child is speaking with you.

If there’s one question I hear more than any other, this may be it.

Many people worry that they're imagining the entire experience.

Healthy discernment is important. The goal is not to blindly believe everything you experience. The goal is learning how to distinguish intuition and genuine inner knowing from fear. This is a skill that tends to develop over time.

The more present you are, the less likely you are to be making things up. Living in the past or future can get you caught up in fear, anxiety, or mental storytelling. Presence creates neutrality, and neutrality makes it easier to recognize genuine intuition and inner knowing. For me, grounding is the key to being in present time and holding a state of neutrality.

If My Spirit Baby Is Choosing Me, Why Is This Journey So Difficult?

This is one of the most heartfelt questions people ask.

If there’s a soul connection, why are there fertility challenges? Why does conception take so long? Why does loss occur? Why do obstacles continue to appear?

The reality is that fertility journeys are complex. Physical, emotional, relational, environmental, energetic, and spiritual factors may all play a role. 

Difficulty does not necessarily mean the connection is absent or that you’re doing something wrong.

What I have found over the many years of working with individuals and families is that the fertility journey is a big learning opportunity. Perhaps you’ve noticed that we humans learn the most through adversity. If things are easy, we don’t tend to change. When things are really hard, people are often more open to new ways of thinking and being. 

The fertility journey for many is one of the most challenging experiences they’ve faced. While it may not always make sense in the moment, there can be profound lessons, growth, and transformation within the experience. This may not be easy to hear, yet I feel it can be vitally important to understand. You are not being punished. You are being offered a gift to expand beyond what you currently know.

Where Am I Blocked And What Can I Do To Unblock Myself So My Baby Can Arrive?

This is one of the most common questions I hear from people on the fertility journey.

Many people want to know what's blocking their fertility journey and what they can do to remove that block so their baby can arrive.

There are many possible factors that can influence fertility, conception, timing, and Spirit Baby connection. Every journey is unique, which means there’s no single answer that applies to everyone.

In fact, it may not be you that's creating a block at all.

When I'm working with individuals and couples, some of the areas I tend to explore include:

• Is this person willing to slow down and create more space in their life?
• Is this person open to daily energetic hygiene practices that support alignment, grounding, and nervous system regulation?
• If there are pets in the home, what role might they be playing within the family system?
• If other people live in the home, is anyone unintentionally influencing the energetic environment?
• If someone is in a partnership, is their partner fully on board with bringing a child into the family?
• Is there a strong heart connection between the partners?
• Is the home environment supportive of the child who wishes to arrive?

This is only a very short list of possibilities.

What I've learned over the years is that fertility is rarely as simple as identifying a single block and removing it. More often, it's an invitation to explore the physical, emotional, relational, energetic, and spiritual dimensions of the journey with curiosity and compassion.

How Can I Shift Timelines and Bring My Spirit Baby In Now?

Many people who discover Spirit Baby work want to know whether there’s a way to accelerate the process. This question can arise from a place of longing, love, exhaustion, and even desperation.

While there are practices that can support alignment, healing, emotional well-being, nervous system regulation, and deeper connection, the concept of controlling timing is often more nuanced than it appears.

As Walter Makichen said to me, if you stop trying to think yourself through this, you might have a chance at getting pregnant.

The invitation is to ask yourself at the deep core level if you’re trying to control the outcome by making it happen. If you are, that might be one of the biggest issues in the fertility journey – trying to force an outcome. 

Fertility is much more than a physical process. It is also relational, spiritual, and more. When we stop looking outside ourselves for the answers, miracles have room to ensue.

This question often emerges when fertility journeys take longer than expected or when there has been some sort of loss.

People wonder if a Spirit Baby can leave, or if timing and plans can change. They wonder if Spirit Babies have free will. The short answer is yes, Spirit Babies have free will, just like the rest of us, and can change their minds.

These are thoughtful and complex questions that deserve careful exploration.

This fear prevents some people from attempting to connect with their future child. Many worry that they'll discover there’s no Spirit Baby connected to them. It’s very rare that there are no Spirit Babies around when I work with clients. And if for some reason none are there, there’s a way to call in Spirit Babies who may be interested in joining a family. I’m huge on looking for win-win scenarios.

People are often interested in knowing if where they live matters, if stress in the home plays a part, if family dynamics might be blocking things, and if Spirit Babies can sense the energy in a home.

In short, the environment can matter. Some Spirit Babies are looking for a certain home or location before they arrive. Others couldn't care less about which home or town you’re in. Each Spirit Baby has their own journey. There is no cookie-cutter approach.

I Recently Experienced a Miscarriage. Can I Call That Soul Back?

This is one of the most tender questions people ask.

Many people wonder whether the soul they connected with before pregnancy is the same soul connected to a loss. Others wonder whether that soul may return in a future pregnancy.

I’ve witnessed the same soul wanting to come back, a new soul ready to come, and more. There is no universal answer. Every experience is deeply personal.

It can be important to remember that love, grief, healing, connection, and hope can coexist. There is always a deeper meaning to what is going on in our lives. This includes when loss occurs. 

A huge lesson I learned from Walter Makichen is that Spirit Babies can be sensitive to our emotions. I was absolutely devastated after a miscarriage and it took two years and my first conversation with Walter Makichen to realize that this baby did not come back because she did not want me to go through another experience like that. I was inadvertently pushing away the very thing I wanted most!

If you’ve found yourself in deep despair over a loss, I invite you to continue to work through your emotions and to remember that Spirit Babies are not here to punish you. They want to connect. It’s hard to connect with someone when they are in deep despair. The more you’re able to open up, even a little bit, the more able your future child will be to communicate with you and for you to move forward on your fertility path in a heartfelt manner.

My Partner Isn't Open to Spirit Baby Work. Does That Matter?

I get asked questions like this all the time.

Many people feel deeply connected to Spirit Baby work while their partner remains skeptical or uninterested.

Some worry that their partner's disbelief will somehow block the journey.

In reality, Spirit Baby connection does not typically require both partners to hold identical beliefs. Mutual respect and openness often matter far more than complete agreement.

There are things you can do to draw in your partner without them knowing on a conscious level. It’s about finding ways to allow them to be who they are and to have their own experience while inviting a deeper connection on a heart and soul level. There is no forcing involved.

I’m Terrified My Baby Will Never Come. What Do I Do?

Beneath many fertility questions is a deeper fear.

What if it never happens? What if I've waited too long? What if everyone else becomes a parent except me? What if my dream never comes true?

Many people carry enormous grief, uncertainty, longing, and fear while walking this path.

If there's one message that seems to emerge repeatedly through Spirit Baby work, it's an invitation toward compassion, presence, trust, and self-love while navigating uncertainty. This was a huge part of my journey and I’m grateful for Walter Makichen helping to guide me through the, at times, very rough waters.

The waiting can be incredibly difficult. The longing can feel all-consuming. And yet, again and again, people are invited back to the present moment, back to their own hearts, and back to the relationship they’re building with themselves along the way. This is the work and many of us resist it.

This is a journey of self-exploration and learning how to love ourselves no matter what. To me, this is the journey of a lifetime. And as we allow ourselves to walk this path we become more embodied and more powerful role models for our children.
