When You and Your Spirit Baby Have Shared Core Desires

Lessons from Walter Makichen & the World of Spirit Babies

Learning from the late Walter Makichen — world-renowned clairvoyant medium and author of Spirit Babies: How to Communicate with the Child You’re Meant to Have — was one of the greatest honors of my life.

Walter was a pioneer in the field of Spirit Baby communication and spiritual fertility work. Long before “spirit babies” became more widely known in the fertility world, he was compassionately teaching parents how to connect with the souls of the children they were meant to have.

I had the privilege of having numerous sessions and conversations with Walter Makichen over several years before his passing. He is the reason I work with Spirit Babies.

Before meeting Walter, I didn't realize I was able to connect with Spirit Babies in such a deep and specific way — especially around what I now call shared core desires between a mother and her future child.

Walter was gentle yet direct. He had a way of explaining metaphysical truths in a way that made sense to my very scientifically trained mind. He did not sugarcoat. He spoke clearly, and that clarity built trust.

There has always been a part of me that feel when something is true. Walter's grounded honesty resonated deeply with me — and with my Spirit Baby.

Shared Core Desires: A Foundation for Conscious Conception

In a previous blog titled “My First Appointment With ‘Spirit Babies’ Intuitive Walter Makichen,” I shared about first of many Spirit Baby reading with Walter. Here, I want to go deeper into something that unfolded over many sessions: The shared core desires between my Spirit Baby and me. 

Through my fertility work today — including the Energetic Fertility Method™ and Spirit Baby readings — I see this often. Many of the souls in what I call the New Generation of Spirit Babies are looking for resonance, alignment, and a shared vision for how life is meant to be lived.

Walter connected with my Spirit Baby immediately. He explained that she wanted a mother who was comfortable with herself — someone willing to show up authentically in the world.

Her past mothers, he said, had been more conforming. This time, she wanted something different.

She chose me because she sensed I would give her permission to be who she truly was. That stopped me in my tracks, because that was exactly what I had longed for growing up.

Breaking Generational Patterns

My own mother followed a more traditional mother archetype. She fulfilled roles. She conformed. She lived a life that felt — to me — passionless and restrained.

I sensed she had dreams she never pursued.

When my parents separated, I remember her working in what felt like a lifeless job as a bartender. When I think of her, “fulfilled” is not the first word that comes to mind. And yet — her path gave me clarity. 

We did not share core desires. And that contrast became a gift. It allowed me to consciously choose a different way of mothering. By the time I began working with Walter Makichen, I already had one child and felt deeply committed to raising children who were free to explore their authentic selves.

This is why my Spirit Baby chose me. She knew I would allow her to shine. She knew I would support her dreams. She knew I would not require her to shrink in order to belong.

And especially for daughters — that permission to be fully themselves felt sacred to both of us.

Feeling the Emotions of Your Spirit Baby

One of the most powerful lessons Walter taught me was this: Sometimes the emotions you are feeling may not actually be yours.

Walter explained that my Spirit Baby struggled with the rigid definitions of feminine roles in our world. She felt anger about societal constraints. She felt the weight of injustice. And I felt it too.

For nearly two years, I had been carrying intense anger that didn’t fully make sense in my own life circumstances.

When Walter said, “You’re feeling her anger,” something clicked. It was liberating.

Through Spirit Baby communication, I learned to discern:

• What emotions were mine
• What emotions belonged to my Spirit Baby
• How to separate and soothe both

This is a crucial piece in energetic fertility work. When you’re highly sensitive — especially if your chakras are open and intuitive — you may be attuned to your Spirit Baby’s emotional field.

Understanding this can bring profound relief.

Authority, Karma, and the Independent Spirit

Walter also shared that authority would be a major theme for this child.

“This is the kind of soul,” he said, “who won’t let you tie her shoe at three years old.”

Independent, self-directed, and determined. Authority and proving herself were part of her karmic blueprint. Interestingly, I related to that deeply.

Walter once said to me:

“Think about the part of you that has had to live on the edges of society — the part that has learned to pass as ‘normal.’ You’re someone who has made her own way. Society often feels like a burden to you. The Spirit Baby feels this too.”

There it was again — shared core desires. We both longed for a more inclusive world. We both felt the weight of systems that didn’t fully support sensitivity, independence, or spiritual depth.

Walter explained that sometimes a Spirit Baby will wait until the mother feels strong enough to hold space for these shared themes. That waiting place is not punishment. It’s preparation.

Tools for Alignment and Fertility Readiness

Each time we met, Walter gave me energetic “homework.”

Practices to:

• Release outdated emotional patterns
• Clear anger that was not mine
• Strengthen my chakra system
• Soothe my Spirit Baby’s fears
• Create safety in my womb space
