How to Stay Grounded During Early Pregnancy

Simple Practices to Feel Calmer, More Present, and Connected to Your Baby
Early pregnancy can be a time of profound excitement, and it can also bring a good deal of uncertainty. Alongside the physical changes come new emotions, new questions, and a great deal of new information to take in.
Over the years, I have found that grounding practices help many women feel calmer and more supported during this stage of the journey. Grounding allows your body and nervous system to settle, so that you experience pregnancy with greater presence and stability.
What Grounding Means and Why It Matters
Grounding is a way of connecting with the energy of the earth, and it is also a way for your essence, or spirit, to be fully in your body. You have likely experienced the opposite. Have you ever forgotten where you put your keys, bumped into a chair by accident, or driven somewhere without remembering the journey? Those are small examples of being ungrounded. When you are ungrounded, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. It can be hard to think straight, and you often feel powerless.
When you are grounded, you are more present in your body and less caught in anxiety or fear. You feel calmer, decisions come more easily, and life flows more smoothly. Grounding is the key to feeling safe and secure in your physical body, and when you feel safe and secure in your own body, your baby does too. Your body is the temple in which your child feels welcome and secure to grow.
Grounding supports:
- Emotional balance
- Nervous system regulation
- Energetic stability
- Deeper connection with your baby
I tend to see stress as energy with a certain vibration, and grounding gives that energy a place to go. The vastness of the earth neutralizes it so it can be reused. During early pregnancy, when so much is happening at once, that is a comforting thing to remember. Grounding is something I work on every day, and it is the foundation of all energetic work.
Daily Grounding Practices
Grounding does not need to be complicated. Breathing deeply and slowly, feeling your feet connected to the earth, spending time in nature, and bringing your awareness gently into your body are all simple ways to begin. Even a few minutes each day helps create a more stable energetic foundation.
Here is the practice I use every day:
- Sit upright in a chair with the soles of your feet on the ground and close your eyes.
- Take a few deep, cleansing breaths, then visualize, sense, or feel a special place in the center of the earth that is unique to you.
- Notice whether there is a certain color, and whether there are trees or water.
- Drop a connection from your tailbone area down into that place, making it at least as wide as your hips. It can be anything that appeals to you and helps you feel connected, such as a redwood tree, a waterfall, a ship's anchor, or a mountain.
- Then simply sit and feel the connection to the earth for at least two minutes. Setting a timer helps if you tend to rush.
If sitting upright feels like too much on a tired day, you can lie down on the grass or the floor, breathe deeply, and allow gravity to help you feel more grounded.
Time in nature is one of the simplest ways to ground.
Perhaps you have felt the slowing down and calm that comes with walking through a forest or along a beach. Taking off your shoes and feeling the earth beneath your feet helps too. For people with sensitive bodies, earth energy can be a wonderful way to nurture the nervous system and create tranquility throughout the body, mind, and spirit.
It also helps to find everyday reminders. Every time you sit in your car, remember to ground. This helped me when I first started out and was juggling many demands on my time, and it may help you too.
Chakra Awareness During Pregnancy
Some women also find it helpful to bring gentle awareness to their chakras during pregnancy. In my book, I describe chakras as energy centers in the body that function like waterwheels, which is fitting since chakra is the Sanskrit word for wheel.
- The first chakra, at the base of your spine, is about safety, security, and grounding.
- The fourth chakra, at your heart center, is about love and relationships.
- The seventh chakra, at the crown of your head, is about spiritual connection, and it sits at the same place as the soft spot on a baby's head, where the spirit enters the body at birth.
Working with your chakras during pregnancy can be as simple as acknowledging each energy center in turn and allowing it to feel balanced and supported.
Many meditation practices guide women through this process in a calm and structured way, which can be a relief when you are tired and want to be led.
Calling Your Energy Back
During pregnancy, it is easy for your attention to become scattered, especially with outside advice, medical information, and strong emotions all competing for space. Your energy follows your attention, so after a long day you may find parts of it still out with a conversation, a worry about the future, or a piece of advice you are not sure about.
Calling your energy back helps restore your sense of presence. In my work I teach this from a grounded state, so you might begin with your breath and your feet on the floor. Then pause and say quietly:
"I bring my energy fully back into my body."
This simple statement helps re-center your awareness. If you would like a more detailed practice for reclaiming your energy, I share more grounding tools in my post on 5 Energetic Tools to Support Your Fertility Journey.
Remember
I have found that pregnant women tend to be quite intuitive, since carrying a baby opens you to a deeper connection with spirit. Being grounded brings the balance and support that kind of sensitivity calls for. These practices complement your prenatal care and do not replace the guidance of your doctor or midwife, so please bring any medical questions or concerns to them.
